Zürich's S-Bahn as a Model
for Regional Rail Systems
Revised May 5, 2005
During the 1980s Zürich's S-Bahn system was reconfigured by constructing a through station at the city's main station (Hauptbahnhof), a new tunnel under the city to Stadelhofen Station, and a new tunnel to the Glatt Valley. These physical improvements were combined with a new coordinated fare and schedule system to create a vastly improved regional rail network. The system's ridership has doubled since the project was completed (1990) and continues to grow.
The S-Bahn project history is described in my report Implementing Zürich's Transit Priority Program prepared for the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University.
I also prepared a presentation titledLessons for San Francisco Bay Area from Zürich's Regional Transport System for the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research (SPUR) in 2000.
